Avatars of Eurocentrism in international political economy textbooks: The case of the Middle East and North Africa

The project to decolonise the curriculum revolves around rethinking margin and centre of discipline. To extent that Middle East North Africa (MENA) is at international political economy (IPE), it ideal entry point curriculum. I conduct a summative content analysis six most commonly used IPE textbooks. what do they reproduce or challenge Eurocentric tropes in their treatment MENA? region largely absent from textbooks, suggesting accorded little agency making global economy. ‘brought in’, ‘ghettoised’ specialist chapter. A qualitative suggests authors avoid overt orientalism but exceptionalise as failure with too democracy economic growth much war. They acknowledge role continued colonialism these failures also deny colonised. miss an opportunity de-provincialise by fostering ‘ecologies knowledge’. article provides analytical framework for research on how textbooks treat other world regions syllabi.
